LGBT Rights in Egypt
Egyptian sexologist Heba Kotb estimates that 10% to 12% of the Egyptian population is homosexual but according to Pew Research Center 95% Egyptians believe that homosexuality should not be accepted by society.
Discrimination and harassment on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity has never be expressly addressed in any Egyptian Constitution or in enacted legislation. No politician or political organization in Egypt has expressed public support for LGBT-rights. Instead, politicians have called for the execution of homosexuals or for them to be sent to prisons and mental institutions to be “converted” to traditional gender norms and heterosexuality.
This exhibition talks about the current situation in post-Mubarak Egypt.
Bacchus and Sergius: Two Gay Saints
Sergius (or Serge) and Bacchus were fourth-century Roman Christian soldiers revered as martyrs and saints by the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Churches. Their feast day is October 7, or 8 in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite.
The close friendship between the two is strongly emphasized in their hagiographies and traditions, making them one of the most famous examples of paired saints; scholar John Boswell considers them to be the most influential set of such an archetype, more so than even Saints Peter and Paul.
In his Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe, Boswell further argues that Sergius and Bacchus’s relationship can be understood as having a romantic dimension, noting that the oldest text of their martyrology describes them as erastai, which can be translated as “lovers”.
